Will you Glory On Ice with me?
skating in the winter is a cherished pastime for many. whether you're young or old, everyone seems to enjoy a good skate. but what about gliding in the cold winter air on a piece of equipment that was once reserved only for hockey players? that's right, we're talking about ice skating!
while it might seem like something that is only for the bravest of souls, we're here to tell you that anyone can learn to skate! all you need is a bit of patience and some basic instruction. before you know it, you'll be out there on the ice with the best of them.
but before we get too ahead of ourselves, let's take a look at some of the basics you need to know when it comes to ice skating.
the first thing you need to understand is that ice skating can be done either as a recreational activity or as a competitive sport. both have their own set of rules and regulations, so it's important to understand which one you want to pursue before getting started.
as for equipment, all you really need is a pair of skates and some warm clothing. most beginners start out by using figure skates, but hockey skates can also be used once you have some experience under your belt.
now that we've got the basics down, let's take a look at how to actually skate on the ice.
the first step is always to make sure that your skates are properly fitted. if they are too tight, they will cause blisters and if they are too loose, you will lose control while skating. once they are fitted properly, lace them up tightly so that they don't come loose while you are skating.
now that your skates are on, it's time to learn how to stand up on them! stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and slightly bent at the knees. hold onto something for balance (a friend or railing) and lift one foot off of the ground. place the other foot flat on the ice in front of you and push off with your toes. repeat this process until you are able to skate forwards without holding onto anything for balance.
once you have mastered this basic movement, try going backwards by reversing the steps above. be careful not to lean too far forward or backwards as this will cause you to lose balance and fall over. alternatively, try doing small jumps or spins while keeping your balance at all times.
as with any new activity, there will be some initial struggles when learning how to skate on ice properly. but with a bit of practice, anyone can do it! just remember to take things slowly at first and don't try doing any crazy stunts until you have perfected your basic skills
Put your money on the ice!
In the NHL, nothing is more important than winning the Stanley Cup. The cup is the ultimate prize in professional hockey, and teams have spent billions of dollars in an effort to win it.
This year, there are a few teams that are considered favorites to win the cup. In the Eastern conference, the Tampa Bay Lightning are considered the top team. Led by captain Steven Stamkos and superstar goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy, the Lightning are poised for another deep playoff run.
The Western conference is a little more wide open, but the Winnipeg Jets are considered the top team. Led by Blake Wheeler and Patrik Laine, the Jets have one of the most potent offenses in the league. If they can play consistent defense, they have a good chance of winning the Cup.
Regardless of who wins, one thing is for sure: fans around the country will be putting their money on the ice!
